Today my hometown was struck by a disgusting hardship.

A woman this afternoon was found by a neighbor, bleeding and naked. She was attacked in her home because she was gay. Two or more men broke into her home through the basement and proceeded to tag her basement. They found the homeowner, who is an open lesbian, and stabbed, assaulted, and carved “dyke” into her chest. They attempted to burn her house to the ground, but the gas only sparked. Somehow, this woman (who remains anonymous until she decides to come out on her own time) was able to escape. She was found naked, bound with zip ties, and bloody. She is still alive and in the hospital. A candle light vigil was held in her name tonight, where more than 500 people from Lincoln and surrounding cities and states joined to talk about the hate and to pay homage to the victim.

A recovery fund has been set up to help her cover medical bills and anything she may need. That link can be found here, along with a link from the original news story.

just because coming out is brave, doesn’t mean being in the closet is cowardly.

And it’s another problem I have with almost all the mainstream groups. They so often like the give this impression that everyone everywhere should just come out and everything will just work itself out. 

But the fact is it’s so often unsafe to do that. Wanting to be safe with a roof over your head is not a cowardly act. 

I completely agree. I applaud LGBT+ people who are out and proud, but it is not safe for all of us to be open about our sexuality. I always tell young people who are still dependant on their parents to mention a gay celebrity or mention that someone at their school or whatever is gay to try to gauge their reaction, and if it’s negative, you might not wanna come out to them. Also, a lot of people live in areas where it’s not safe to be out about being LGBT+, whether you live in a rough area where the local lads will bash you, or places in South Africa where lesbians are subjected to ‘corrective rape’.

Here is a boy who likes boys. But this boy who likes boys doesn’t like boys who don’t like boys who like boys. This sentence is complicated, but less complicated than his life as a gay student.

Here is a girl who likes girls. But this girl who likes girls doesn’t like girls who don’t like girls who like girls. This sentence is complicated, but less complicated than her life as a gay student.

A Christian magazine is devoting a full-page ad to raising awareness about LGBT youth homelessness. Wow. More.
